Peres Jepchirchir Doping Allegation: Olympic Champion Provisionally Suspended
Peres Jepchirchir, the Olympic and World Championships marathon gold medallist, has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) after an out-of-competition sample tested positive for EPO (erythropoietin). The news comes as a major blow to the sporting world, as the 33-year-old Kenyan is regarded as one of the most successful female marathon runners of all time.
According to a statement released by the AIU, Jepchirchir provided the sample prior to winning the Sydney Marathon on 30 August 2026. At the time, she was in Kenya. She won the Sydney race in a time of two hours, 18 minutes and 31 seconds, finishing more than three minutes ahead of compatriot Irene Chepet Cheptai.
EPO, or erythropoietin, is a natural substance produced within the kidneys that stimulates the creation of new red blood cells. If injected, it is only detectable in the urine or blood for a short window of time, and increases the amount of red blood cells, which carry oxygen to the muscles, in the bloodstream. This can give a runner an unnatural endurance advantage, which is why EPO is considered a serious prohibited substance in the world of doping.
Jepchirchir's career has been filled with stellar achievements. She became the Olympic women's marathon champion at the 2026 Tokyo Olympics and returned to the Japanese capital to win the World Championships in September 2026. She broke the women's half-marathon world record in 2026 and set it on three occasions in 2026.
In addition to Sydney, her other major wins came at the New York Marathon in 2026, the Boston Marathon in 2026 and the London Marathon in 2026. The Sydney Marathon became the seventh world major in 2026, and Jepchirchir became the first woman to win its inaugural edition.
The question now is what impact this suspension will have on her career. Under AIU rules, an athlete cannot compete in any event during a provisional suspension. Jepchirchir has the right to appeal the decision and can request a hearing to prove her innocence. However, if the EPO use is proven, she could face a lengthy ban, which could also cast doubt on her Olympic and World Championships achievements.
For Kenya, the news is even more worrying, as the country has previously struggled with several doping controversies. Kenyan athletics officials have not yet issued an official statement on the matter. The AIU has said it will continue to investigate the case and follow due process.
For sports fans and analysts, this development is shocking, as Jepchirchir has always been seen as a disciplined and inspiring athlete. Her Sydney victory is now under a cloud of controversy, as the sample was taken before the race. For now, all eyes are on the AIU's next move and Jepchirchir's response.
